How it works
Fares on the London Tube are determined by three main factors: how you pay, the zones you travel through, and the time of day. Oyster and contactless payments are always cheaper than paper tickets and have daily and weekly price caps, which means you never pay more than the set amount for a day's or week's worth of travel.
Inputs explained
- Payment Method: Choose between Oyster/contactless (the cheapest option) or a paper single ticket.
- Time of Travel: Fares are higher during Peak hours on weekdays. Off-Peak fares apply at all other times, including weekends and public holidays.
- From/To Zone: London is divided into 9 travel zones. The fare depends on the zones you travel through. Your fare is calculated based on the highest-numbered zone you pass through.
Example
A journey from Zone 1 (e.g., Covent Garden) to Zone 3 (e.g., Finsbury Park) during Peak times using a contactless card:
- Payment: Contactless
- Time: Peak
- Zones: 1-3
- Estimated Fare: £3.70
The daily cap for Zones 1-3 with a contactless card is £10.00, so any further journeys that day would not exceed this total.
Tips & notes
- Always use a contactless or Oyster card for the cheapest fares and automatic daily/weekly capping.
- A single paper ticket can cost more than double the equivalent Oyster/contactless fare.
- Fares are subject to change. Always check the official Transport for London (TfL) website for the latest prices before you travel.
