How it works

Based on UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021):

  • Unlimited Contracts: 30 days of annual leave per year of service
  • Limited Contracts: 2 days of leave per month of service (24 days per year)

Total Annual Leave = Leave Days per Year × Years of Service

Pro-Rated Leave = (Days Worked This Year ÷ 365) × Annual Leave Days

End-of-Service Balance = Total Leave Earned (assuming no leave taken for this calculator)

Inputs explained

  • Employment Start Date: The date you officially started working with your current employer in the UAE.
  • Contract Type: Limited contracts have a fixed duration (typically 2 years or less), while unlimited contracts have no specific end date.
  • Years of Service: Total years you have worked, automatically calculated from your start date.
  • Calculation Date: The date as of which you want to calculate your leave balance (typically today's date).

Example

An employee with an Unlimited Contract:

  • Employment Start Date: January 1, 2022
  • Years of Service: 3 years
  • Calculation Date: January 1, 2025

Results:

  • Annual Leave Entitlement: 30 days/year
  • Total Annual Leave: 30 × 3 = 90 days
  • Pro-Rated Leave (Current Year): 30 days
  • End-of-Service Balance: 90 days

Tips & notes

  • Unlimited contracts are more common for professional roles and offer better job security and leave benefits.
  • Annual leave accrues from the first day of employment, but can only be taken after completing 6 months of service.
  • Employees can agree with their employer to carry over unused leave to the next year, subject to company policy.
  • The minimum annual leave cannot be less than 2 days per month for limited contracts and 30 days per year for unlimited contracts.
  • At the end of service, unused leave is paid out based on your final salary.
  • Public holidays are separate from annual leave and do not count against your leave balance.
