How it works

Due Date = Transfer Date + (280 days - Embryo Age). We calculate the due date by adding the remaining gestational time to the embryo transfer date. For fresh embryos, we use a standard number of days from retrieval.

The calculation accounts for the fact that the embryo has already been developing for several days before transfer, so we subtract the embryo age from the standard 280-day (40-week) pregnancy.

Inputs explained

  • Embryo Transfer Date: The date the embryo was transferred to the uterus
  • IVF Type: Fresh transfer (same cycle as retrieval) or Frozen transfer (later cycle)
  • Embryo Age at Transfer: How many days the embryo developed before transfer (typically 3, 5, or 6 days)

Example

Scenario: 5-Day Frozen Embryo transferred on January 1, 2024

Calculation:

  • Transfer Date: January 1, 2024
  • Embryo Age: 5 days
  • Days to add: 280 - 5 = 275 days
  • Estimated Due Date: January 1 + 275 days = October 2, 2024

Tips & notes

  • The due date is an estimate; only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date
  • The gestational age is calculated from the date of fertilization, not the transfer
  • Your fertility clinic will provide the most accurate due date based on early ultrasounds
  • IVF due dates are typically more accurate than LMP-based calculations
  • Day-5 blastocysts are the most commonly transferred embryos

FAQs

By adding the remaining gestational time (280 days minus embryo age) to the embryo transfer date. This accounts for the embryo's development before transfer.

A fresh transfer is done in the same cycle as egg retrieval, while a frozen transfer (FET) is done in a later cycle using cryopreserved embryos.

IVF due dates are generally more accurate than LMP-based dates because we know the exact fertilization date. However, it's still an estimate. Your doctor will confirm with early ultrasounds.

Embryo age determines how many days of development have already occurred before transfer, which affects the calculation of the remaining pregnancy duration.
