How it Works

We compute mean, median, and standard deviation for systolic and diastolic readings within a selected date range. Classification follows AHA/ACC guidelines based on the most recent mean.

Formulas:

Mean = Sum of all values / Count
Median = Middle value when sorted (or average of two middle values)
Standard Deviation = √(Σ(x - mean)² / (n - 1))

Inputs Explained

  • Date & Time: When the BP reading was taken. Helps track trends over time.
  • Systolic (mmHg): Top number; pressure when heart beats (70-250 range).
  • Diastolic (mmHg): Bottom number; pressure when heart rests (40-150 range).
  • Heart Rate (bpm): Optional; beats per minute (30-220 range).
  • Notes: Optional; record conditions (e.g., "after exercise", "morning reading").
  • Date Range Filter: Analyze specific time periods (e.g., last 30 days, last week).

Example

Readings:

  • Day 1: 120/80 mmHg
  • Day 2: 125/82 mmHg
  • Day 3: 130/85 mmHg

Calculation:

  • Mean Systolic: (120 + 125 + 130) / 3 = 125 mmHg
  • Mean Diastolic: (80 + 82 + 85) / 3 = 82.33 ≈ 82 mmHg
  • Median Systolic: 125 mmHg (middle value)
  • Median Diastolic: 82 mmHg (middle value)

Classification: Elevated (125/82 → Systolic 120-129 AND Diastolic < 80)

Tips & Notes

  • Take multiple readings at different times of day for a better average.
  • Measure at the same time each day for consistency (e.g., every morning before breakfast).
  • Rest for 5 minutes before taking a reading; sit quietly with feet flat on floor.
  • Use proper technique: Arm at heart level, cuff snug but not tight.
  • Classification is a quick reference; follow your doctor's advice for diagnosis.
  • Track trends over weeks/months rather than focusing on individual readings.
  • Consider white coat syndrome: Some people have higher BP in medical settings.

FAQs

Generally < 120/< 80 mmHg according to AHA guidelines. Use the calculator to see your average and classification based on multiple readings.

Sort all values from lowest to highest and pick the middle value. The calculator does this automatically for both systolic and diastolic readings.

Single readings can be affected by stress, time of day, or measurement errors. Multiple readings provide a more accurate picture of your blood pressure over time.

Mean is the average (sum ÷ count). Median is the middle value when sorted. Median is less affected by outliers (unusual readings).
