Calculate Adjusted Duration
Target Speed Helper
Find what playback speed is needed to finish in a target time.
How it Works
Adjusted Duration = Total Duration / Playback Speed. If you provide a word count, we compute effective WPM = Words / (Adjusted Duration / 60).
Formulas:
Adjusted Duration (seconds) = Total Duration (seconds) ÷ Playback SpeedEffective WPM = Word Count ÷ (Adjusted Duration (seconds) ÷ 60)
Inputs Explained
- Total Duration (H:MM:SS): The original audiobook length. Find this in your audiobook app or store listing.
- Playback Speed: The speed multiplier (0.25x to 3.0x). 1.0x is normal speed; 1.5x is 50% faster; 0.75x is 25% slower.
- Word Count (Optional): Total words in the audiobook. Used to calculate effective words per minute (WPM).
- Rounding Options: Choose precision for adjusted duration and WPM results.
Example
Scenario: 10 hours 30 minutes audiobook at 1.5x speed
Calculation:
- Total Duration: 10:30:00 = 37,800 seconds
- Speed: 1.5x
- Adjusted Duration: 37,800 ÷ 1.5 = 25,200 seconds = 7:00:00
With Word Count (80,000 words):
- Adjusted Duration: 25,200 seconds = 420 minutes
- Effective WPM: 80,000 ÷ 420 ≈ 190 WPM
Result: The audiobook will take 7 hours at 1.5x speed, with an effective listening pace of 190 words per minute.
Tips & Notes
- Most apps support speeds from 0.5x to 3.0x. Use preset buttons for quick changes.
- Effective WPM helps gauge listening pace; higher WPM (200+) may be hard to comprehend for complex material.
- 1.25x to 1.5x is popular for faster listening without sacrificing comprehension.
- Slower speeds (0.75x-0.9x) can help with dense non-fiction or language learning.
- 2.0x and above works well for re-listening or familiar content.
- Use target speed helper to plan finish times for reading challenges or deadlines.
