How it works

The VTU grading system is based on a 10-point scale where each letter grade (S to F) corresponds to a specific grade point. Your Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is the weighted average of these grade points, calculated as Σ (Grade Point × Credits) / Σ Credits. Your CGPA is the weighted average of all your semester SGPAs.

Inputs explained

  • SGPA Mode: Enter the credits and the grade you achieved for each subject in a single semester.
  • CGPA Mode: Enter the SGPA and the total credits for each completed semester.
  • VTU Grading Scheme: Use the provided table to ensure you are using the correct grade points for your letter grades.

Example (SGPA Calculation)

Suppose you have four subjects with the following grades and credits:

  • Maths: 4 credits, Grade 'A' (9 points)
  • Physics: 4 credits, Grade 'B' (8 points)
  • C Programming: 3 credits, Grade 'S' (10 points)
  • Mechanical: 3 credits, Grade 'C' (7 points)
  1. Total Points = (4×9) + (4×8) + (3×10) + (3×7) = 36 + 32 + 30 + 21 = 119
  2. Total Credits = 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 14
  3. SGPA = 119 / 14 = 8.5

Your SGPA for the semester is 8.5.

Tips & notes

  • Always refer to your official VTU results sheet for the most accurate grades and credits.
  • Subjects with higher credits have a larger impact on your SGPA.
  • The formula for converting VTU CGPA/SGPA to percentage is (CGPA - 0.75) * 10.

FAQs

SGPA is calculated by multiplying the grade point of each subject by its credits, summing these values, and then dividing by the total number of credits for that semester.

The official formula recognized by VTU is: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) * 10.

An SGPA of 8.0 and above is generally considered very good. An SGPA above 9.0 is considered excellent.

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the GPA for a single semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the average of all your SGPAs across multiple semesters.
