How it Works

Square charges a percentage plus a fixed fee per transaction, with rates varying by plan and payment type. We compute total fees, net amount, and effective rate. You can also add optional fees like disputes, chargebacks, and monthly subscription fees.

The formula is: Fee = (Amount × Percentage) + Fixed Fee + Optional Fees. Your net received is the amount minus all fees. The effective rate shows the total fee as a percentage of the transaction amount.

Inputs Explained

  • Pricing Plan: Square offers Standard (no monthly fee), Plus (lower rates + monthly fee), Premium (lowest rates + higher monthly fee), or Custom (your own rates).
  • Payment Type:
    • In‑Person: Card reader transactions (lowest rates)
    • Online: eCommerce payments (moderate rates)
    • Card on File: Recurring or saved card charges (highest rates)
    • ACH: Bank transfers (percentage only, no fixed fee)
  • Amount: The transaction amount you're processing.
  • Currency: Select your currency (USD default). Uses current exchange rates.
  • Optional Fees:
    • Dispute Fee: Charged per dispute (default $15)
    • Chargeback Fee: Charged per chargeback (default $15)
    • Monthly Fee: Subscription fee for Plus/Premium plans
  • Rounding: Choose precision for calculations (nearest cent or dime).

Example Calculations

Example 1: Standard Plan, Online Payment

Inputs:

  • Plan: Standard
  • Type: Online
  • Amount: $100.00

Calculation:

  • Fee = ($100.00 × 2.9%) + $0.30
  • Fee = $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20
  • Net = $100.00 - $3.20 = $96.80
  • Effective Rate = ($3.20 / $100.00) × 100 = 3.20%

Result: You receive $96.80, pay $3.20 in fees (3.20% effective rate)

Example 2: Plus Plan, In‑Person Payment

Inputs:

  • Plan: Plus
  • Type: In‑Person
  • Amount: $100.00

Calculation:

  • Fee = ($100.00 × 2.5%) + $0.10
  • Fee = $2.50 + $0.10 = $2.60
  • Net = $100.00 - $2.60 = $97.40
  • Effective Rate = ($2.60 / $100.00) × 100 = 2.60%

Result: You receive $97.40, pay $2.60 in fees (2.60% effective rate)

Example 3: Premium Plan with Dispute Fee

Inputs:

  • Plan: Premium
  • Type: Online
  • Amount: $100.00
  • Dispute Fee: $15.00 (enabled)

Calculation:

  • Main Fee = ($100.00 × 2.6%) + $0.30 = $2.90
  • Dispute Fee = $15.00
  • Total Fee = $2.90 + $15.00 = $17.90
  • Net = $100.00 - $17.90 = $82.10
  • Effective Rate = ($17.90 / $100.00) × 100 = 17.90%

Result: You receive $82.10, pay $17.90 in total fees (17.90% effective rate)

Tips & Notes

  • Online payments typically have higher percentages than in‑person. If you primarily sell in person, Standard or Plus plans offer better rates.
  • Card‑on‑file rates may differ. Recurring charges and saved card transactions have higher risk, resulting in higher fees.
  • Monthly subscription fees apply to Plus/Premium plans. Include them if you want to see total monthly cost. For high-volume merchants, lower per-transaction rates can offset monthly fees.
  • Dispute/chargeback fees are charged per incident. Add them if you want to factor in potential dispute costs, but they're not charged on every transaction.
  • ACH transfers have lower fees. At 1% with no fixed fee, ACH is cost-effective for larger transactions, though processing takes longer.
  • Compare plans based on your volume. Use the calculator to test different scenarios and see which plan saves you the most money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plans have different percentage and fixed fees, and monthly subscription costs. Standard has no monthly fee but higher transaction rates (e.g., 2.9% + $0.30 online). Plus and Premium have monthly subscriptions but lower transaction fees. Choose your plan or use Custom to set your own rates based on negotiated pricing.

Yes. Use Custom plan to define your own percentages and fixed fees per payment method. This is useful for testing different scenarios or if you have negotiated custom rates with Square.

In-Person transactions use a physical card reader and typically have the lowest rates due to lower fraud risk. Online payments are processed through eCommerce and have slightly higher rates. Card on File transactions are recurring or manual charges of saved cards, with the highest rates due to higher risk of disputes and chargebacks.

Dispute and chargeback fees are optional toggles in the calculator. They're typically $15 per incident. Enable these if you want to factor in potential dispute costs, but they're not charged on every transaction—only when a customer disputes a charge.

Plus and Premium plans have monthly subscription fees in addition to per-transaction fees. The calculator can display monthly fees separately. If you process many transactions, lower per-transaction rates may offset the monthly cost. Use the calculator to compare total costs across different plans based on your typical transaction volume.

Yes. Use the Reverse Fee Solver section below the main calculator. Enter your target net amount (what you want to receive after fees), and it will calculate the gross amount you need to charge, including all selected fees.
