Calculate Mortar Needed
Typical: 3/8 in (0.375)
Typical: 5-10%
Typical: 135 lb/ft³ (2160 kg/m³)
How it Works
Mortar Volume = Number of Bricks × (Joint Thickness × Brick Length × Brick Height). We calculate bricks per row and rows from wall dimensions, apply a waste factor, and convert to cubic yards or cubic meters. If you provide a mortar density, we also estimate weight.
Inputs Explained
- Wall Dimensions: Length, height, and units (ft or m).
- Brick/Block Size: Standard Modular Brick, Standard CMU Block, or Custom dimensions.
- Mortar Joint Thickness: Typically 3/8 in (10 mm).
- Waste Factor: Add 5-10% for over-ordering and spillage.
Example
Wall 20×8 ft (240×96 in), Standard Brick, 3/8 in joint, 5% waste:
- Bricks per row = 240 ÷ (7.625+0.375) ≈ 30
- Rows = 96 ÷ (2.25+0.375) ≈ 36
- Total Bricks = 1080
- Mortar Volume ≈ 3.2 ft³
- Adjusted = 3.36 ft³ → 0.12 cu yd
- Weight ≈ 0.23 tons (135 lb/ft³)

Tips & Notes
- Mortar joint thickness is typically 3/8 in (10 mm). Adjust if your project uses a different size.
- Add a waste factor (5–10%) for over‑ordering and spillage.
- Mortar density varies; use a supplier's value for accurate weight estimates.
FAQs
The calculator estimates total mortar volume based on joint thickness and brick dimensions.
Around 135 lb/ft³ (2160 kg/m³). Adjust based on your mix design.
It supports both. Choose your units for inputs and outputs.
