How it works

Volume = Surface Area × Average Depth. We calculate the surface area based on the shape (rectangular, circular, oval) and multiply it by the average depth to find the volume.

  • Rectangular: Area = Length × Width
  • Circular: Area = π × (Diameter / 2)²
  • Oval: Area = π × (Length / 2) × (Width / 2)
  • Irregular: Area ≈ Length × Width (estimate)

Inputs explained

  • Pond Shape: Select rectangular, circular, oval, or irregular based on your pond.
  • Dimensions: Enter length and width for rectangular/oval ponds, or diameter for circular ponds.
  • Average Depth: Measure the depth at several points and calculate the average for accuracy.

Example

Rectangular Pond: Length = 5m, Width = 4m, Average Depth = 1m

Surface Area = 5 × 4 = 20 m²

Volume = 20 × 1 = 20 m³

Results:

  • 20 m³
  • 20,000 Liters
  • 5,283 US Gallons
  • 4,399 UK Gallons

Tips & notes

  • Measure the average depth at several points for a more accurate estimate.
  • Irregular ponds are harder to calculate; use an average length and width or divide into sections.
  • Knowing the volume helps in sizing pumps, filters, and treating the water.
  • For koi ponds, proper volume calculation is essential for fish health and filtration.
  • Account for rocks, plants, and features that displace water.

FAQs

Use an average length and width, and multiply by the average depth. For very irregular ponds, divide into sections and calculate each separately.

1 m³ = 1000 Liters. This is a direct conversion.

Approximately 264.172 US gallons or 219.969 UK gallons per cubic meter.
