How it works
SGPA is calculated using the formula: SGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) / Σ(Credits). We sum the quality points (credits multiplied by grade points) for all subjects and divide by the total credits. The percentage is calculated as SGPA divided by the maximum grade points, multiplied by 100. For example, on a 10-point scale, SGPA 8.5 equals 85%.
Inputs explained
- Subject Name: The name of the course or subject.
- Credits: Credit hours assigned to the subject (typically 1-4).
- Grade: Letter grade received (S, A, B, C, D, E, F).
- Grading Scale: Maximum grade points (10.0, 4.0, 5.0, or custom).
Example
Semester 1 (Engineering): Mathematics (4 credits, A=9), Physics (4 credits, B=8), C Programming (3 credits, S=10). Quality Points = 4×9 + 4×8 + 3×10 = 36 + 32 + 30 = 98. Total Credits = 4 + 4 + 3 = 11. SGPA = 98 / 11 ≈ 8.91. Percentage = (8.91/10) × 100 = 89.1%.
Tips & notes
- Include all theory and lab courses with their correct credit values for accurate SGPA calculation.
- Use the grading scale your university follows. Most Indian universities use a 10-point scale, while US universities typically use 4.0.
- Your SGPA is a key metric for academic performance and is used to calculate CGPA across semesters.
- Some universities may have different grade-to-point mappings; verify with your institution.
- Keep track of your SGPA each semester to monitor academic progress and maintain scholarship eligibility.
