How it works

VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) uses a 10-point absolute grading system:

  • S (Outstanding) = 10 grade points
  • A (Excellent) = 9 grade points
  • B (Very Good) = 8 grade points
  • C (Good) = 7 grade points
  • D (Average) = 6 grade points
  • E (Below Average) = 5 grade points
  • F (Fail) = 0 grade points

SGPA Formula: SGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) / Σ(Credits)

CGPA Formula: CGPA = (Previous CGPA × Previous Credits + Current SGPA × Current Credits) / (Previous Credits + Current Credits)

We also calculate your academic classification based on your CGPA.

Inputs explained

  • Subject Name: Name of the course (e.g., Mathematics, Physics, C Programming).
  • Credits: Credit value assigned to each course. Theory courses typically have 3-4 credits, labs have 1-2 credits.
  • Grade: Letter grade received (S, A, B, C, D, E, or F).
  • Calculation Mode: Choose SGPA for single semester or CGPA for cumulative calculation.
  • Previous CGPA/Credits: (CGPA mode only) Your cumulative GPA and total credits before the current semester.

Example

A VTU student has the following subjects in one semester:

  • Mathematics (4 credits, Grade A = 9 points) → Quality Points = 4 × 9 = 36
  • Physics (4 credits, Grade B = 8 points) → Quality Points = 4 × 8 = 32
  • C Programming (3 credits, Grade S = 10 points) → Quality Points = 3 × 10 = 30

Calculation:

  • Total Quality Points = 36 + 32 + 30 = 98
  • Total Credits = 4 + 4 + 3 = 11
  • SGPA = 98 / 11 = 8.91
  • Classification: First Class (8.0 ≤ CGPA < 9.0)

Tips & notes

  • Include all courses: Add both theory and lab courses with their correct credit values.
  • Check your syllabus: Credit values may vary by program. Verify with your VTU syllabus.
  • Academic classification: Your CGPA determines your class (First Class with Distinction, First Class, etc.) and eligibility for honors.
  • Failing grades: F grades (0 points) significantly impact your GPA. You'll need to retake failed courses.
  • Improvement exams: If you retake a course, the better grade typically replaces the previous one.
  • Official verification: Always cross-check with official VTU grade cards and ordinances.

FAQs

VTU uses a 10-point absolute grading system: S (Outstanding) = 10, A (Excellent) = 9, B (Very Good) = 8, C (Good) = 7, D (Average) = 6, E (Below Average) = 5, F (Fail) = 0.

CGPA = (Previous CGPA × Previous Credits + Current Semester SGPA × Current Semester Credits) / (Previous Credits + Current Semester Credits). This weighted average accounts for all completed semesters.

A CGPA of 8.0 or higher is required for First Class. For First Class with Distinction, you need a CGPA of 9.0 or higher.

SGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) / Σ(Credits). Multiply each subject's credits by its grade points, sum these products, then divide by total credits.

Lab courses typically have 1-2 credits depending on the course. Check your VTU syllabus or grade card for the official credit values for each course.
