Section Breakdown
How It Works
APES (AP Environmental Science) has two parts: Section I (Multiple Choice) with about 80 questions, and Section II (Free Response) with 3 prompts, typically 10 points each, totaling 30 points by default.
Default weights are MCQ 60%, FRQ 40%. You can adjust weights, FRQ totals, and the scoring curve in Advanced Settings.
We compute a weighted raw percentage and map it to a 1–5 estimate using adjustable score bands. The exact AP curve varies each year based on exam difficulty and overall student performance.
Inputs Explained
- MCQ Correct and Total: Enter the number of multiple choice questions you answered correctly out of 80 (default). You can change the total if you used a different practice test.
- FRQs 1-3: Enter rubric points (0-10 each by default) for the three free-response questions. These typically cover data analysis, environmental problems and solutions, and policy/management scenarios.
- Advanced Settings: Adjust section weights (must sum to 100%), edit FRQ totals if your rubric differs, and customize score band thresholds to match a specific curve.
Example Calculation
Let's walk through a sample calculation:
- MCQ: 54 out of 80 → 54 ÷ 80 = 67.5%
- FRQs: 7 + 8 + 6 = 21 out of 30 → 21 ÷ 30 = 70.0%
Using the default weights (MCQ 60%, FRQ 40%), the weighted raw percentage is:
(0.675 × 0.60) + (0.700 × 0.40) = 0.405 + 0.280 = 0.685 → 68.5%
With the default curve, 68.5% falls into the 60-74% range, yielding an estimated score of 3.
Tips & Notes
- Curves Change Yearly: College Board adjusts the curve annually based on overall performance. Treat this calculator as a study guide, not a prediction of your actual score.
- FRQ Strategy: Show units in calculations, set up proportions and dimensional analysis clearly, and tie environmental impacts to specific causes and policy solutions. Small rubric gains can significantly impact your overall estimate.
- Master Key Themes: Practice common topics—sustainability, energy resources (renewable vs. non-renewable), population dynamics, pollution types and control, ecosystem services, and Earth systems (water, carbon, nitrogen cycles).
- Dimensional Analysis: Be fluent with unit conversions and using conversion factors. Many FRQ questions require calculations with proper units.
- Data Interpretation: Practice reading graphs, charts, and tables. Be able to identify trends, calculate rates of change, and make predictions based on data.
