Section Breakdown

How It Works

The AP Psychology exam has two parts: Section I (Multiple Choice) with 100 questions making up about two-thirds of your overall score, and Section II (Free Response) with two questions making up the remaining third.

Default weights are MCQ 66.7% and FRQ 33.3%. You can change these in Advanced Settings if your teacher uses a different weighting.

We compute a weighted raw percentage and map it to a 1–5 score using adjustable bands. The exact AP curve varies each year based on overall student performance and exam difficulty.

Inputs Explained

  • MCQ Correct and Total: Enter the number of multiple choice questions you answered correctly out of 100. You can change the total if you used a shortened practice test.
  • FRQ 1 (Concept Application): Enter points earned (0-7 by default) for the question that asks you to apply psychological concepts to scenarios.
  • FRQ 2 (Research Design): Enter points earned (0-7 by default) for the question about research methodology, experimental design, or data interpretation.
  • Advanced Settings: Adjust section weights (must sum to 100%), customize FRQ total points if your rubric differs, and edit score band thresholds to match a specific curve.

Example Calculation

Let's walk through a sample calculation:

  • MCQ: 72 out of 100 → 72 ÷ 100 = 72.0%
  • FRQs: 5 + 4 = 9 out of 14 → 9 ÷ 14 ≈ 64.3%

Using the default weights (MCQ 66.7%, FRQ 33.3%), the weighted raw percentage is:

(0.720 × 0.667) + (0.643 × 0.333) ≈ 0.694 = 69.4%

With the default curve, 69.4% falls into the 60-74% range, yielding an estimated score of 3.

Tips & Notes

  • Curves Change Yearly: College Board adjusts the curve annually based on overall performance. Treat this calculator as a study guide, not a prediction of your actual score.
  • FRQ Strategy: For FRQs, define psychological terms clearly, apply concepts to the specific scenario, and make explicit connections to the prompt. Small rubric gains can significantly affect your estimate.
  • Focus on High-Yield Topics: Practice with timed MCQs and review common topics like classical and operant conditioning, memory models, cognitive biases, research methods, and psychological perspectives.
  • Know Your Vocabulary: AP Psychology has a lot of specific terminology. Make sure you can define and apply key terms from each unit.
  • Practice Research Methods: The research design FRQ is predictable in format—know your experimental designs, variables, controls, and ethical considerations.
