How It Works

The AP English Language and Composition exam consists of two main sections. Section I includes 45 multiple choice questions testing your reading comprehension and rhetorical analysis skills. Section II contains three free-response essays: a Synthesis essay, a Rhetorical Analysis essay, and an Argument essay, each scored on a 6-point rubric.

By default, this calculator uses the following approximate weights: MCQ 45% and the three essays together accounting for 55% (roughly 18.3% each). These weights reflect typical exam structures, though you can customize them in the Advanced Settings panel to match specific practice exams or teacher-provided curves.

The formula is straightforward: we calculate each section's percentage (earned ÷ total), multiply by the section weight, sum them all to get a weighted raw percentage, then map that percentage to the 1–5 score bands. The default bands are approximate and not official—exact AP curves vary each year based on overall student performance.

Inputs Explained

• MCQ Correct and Total: Enter the number of multiple choice questions you answered correctly out of the total (typically 45). This section tests your ability to analyze passages and understand rhetorical strategies.
• Synthesis Essay Points: Input your rubric points earned (0–6). The Synthesis essay requires you to develop an argument using multiple provided sources.
• Rhetorical Analysis Points: Enter points earned (0–6) on the Rhetorical Analysis essay, where you analyze how an author uses rhetorical strategies to achieve a purpose.
• Argument Essay Points: Input your score (0–6) for the Argument essay, where you construct and defend an argument based on a given prompt.
• Advanced Settings: Adjust section weights if your practice exam uses different percentages, or customize the score band thresholds to match a specific curve.

Example Calculation

Let's walk through a sample calculation with these scores:

• MCQ: 33 out of 45 → 33 ÷ 45 ≈ 73.3%
• Synthesis: 4 out of 6 → 4 ÷ 6 ≈ 66.7%
• Rhetorical Analysis: 3 out of 6 → 3 ÷ 6 = 50.0%
• Argument: 5 out of 6 → 5 ÷ 6 ≈ 83.3%

Using the default weights (MCQ 45%, Synthesis 18.3%, Rhetorical 18.3%, Argument 18.4%), the weighted raw percentage is:

(0.733 × 0.45) + (0.667 × 0.183) + (0.50 × 0.183) + (0.833 × 0.184) ≈ 0.696 = 69.6%

With the default curve, 69.6% falls in the 60–74% band, yielding an estimated score of 3.
